Thrips (Thysanoptera)

Thrips

There are over 3000 recorded species worldwide, with over 150 in the UK. Also known as thunder flies, because they sometimes take to the air in huge numbers especially during thundery weather conditions. The airborne cloud of thrips search for other sources of a liquid food supply, and if they settle on human skin they search amongst the folds and pores for moisture. Thrips indoors will find their way into food packets; picture frames and are attracted to light coloured surfaces such as papered wall coverings.

Identification:
Thrips are tiny, slender insects with fringed wings. Adults 1 - 1.5mm in length, usually winged but some species wingless. Colour varies, depending on species. Most are dark with whitish or translucent wings that are long, thin and fringed with long hairs.

Biology:
Eggs laid in or on plants, hatch within 2 weeks. Larvae feed on plant sap.

Control:
Control of these seasonal pests is achieved by applying a broad-spectrum residual insecticide labelled for flying insects to entry points around buildings. Proofing of windows and doors with fly screens will also prevent insects entering premises.
